Gering, Nebraska (May 2, 2024) - Gering High School's Esports team displayed exceptional skill and sportsmanship as they clinched the runner-up position in the highly competitive State Esports Championship. The championship, organized by the Nebraska Scholastic Esports Association (NSeSA), took place at Concordia University in Seward, where teams from across the state battled it out in Rocket League.
In an intense final showdown, Gering High School's team, which included Espn Marez, Justin Knouse, and Austin Kizzire, alongside alternate Coltin Hutton, showcased their skill in a match that ended in a narrow 1-2 loss during sudden death overtime.
"Our kids played an exciting match," shared Coach Rick Marez. "Despite losing a heartbreaker, we made an awesome impression on the opposing teams and college recruiters. We have some of the best skilled players in the state, and it's fun to watch them compete and support one another."
Gering High School's Esports is a rapidly growing program that blends strategic thinking and teamwork for a unique opportunity to engage competitive games while honing in skills of communication, collaboration and critical thinking.
