Transportation

Gering Public Schools provides student transportation through a contract with First Student, Inc.  All bus routes and decisions are made by First Student. For route information, please contact the team at First Student: 308-635-6214.

Riding the bus is a privilege that is extended to all who qualify, not a right. Student behavior directly influences the safety of the bus. The transportation staff would like to make both students and their parents aware of the kind of behavior that is expected on the bus in order to maintain safe driving conditions. It is understood that the bus is an extension of the classroom and as such, the rules for behavior that apply in the classroom also apply on the bus.

Administrative rules found in the Transportation Plan will govern the safe operation of school vehicles. Students violating these regulations may have their riding privileges revoked or suspended. Parents will be responsible for damage done to transportation vehicles or equipment by their children.

To request bus service, please review and complete the transportation contract HERE.

**Please Note: A separate contract/request should be filled out for each student.**

First Student, Inc.

At First Student, the safety and security of students is our core value, and at the forefront of everything we do. Only highly trained drivers are employed, and comprehensive background checks ensure the right candidates are hired. Re-checks are regularly completed throughout an employee's tenure with the company.

First Student's driver training programs are second to none. Classroom and behind-the-wheel training includes units on behavior management, and defensive driving techniques. In addition, drivers and attendants take part in an annual bullying prevention and awareness safety campaign, which helps them understand the signs, symptoms, and reasons students bully, and empowers them to take immediate action.

A number of bus safety features such as Child Check-Mate®, an electronic reminder system designed to ensure that a child is not left unattended on a bus, crossing gates to allow children to cross in front of the bus at a safe distance, onboard digital video cameras, and GPS systems, allow us to pinpoint each bus's exact location at all times.

School buses follow a stringent daily, monthly, and annual vehicle maintenance program in addition to the multi-point inspection each driver conducts prior to beginning each route.

Our First Student team knows there is nothing more important than providing children with safe and reliable transportation. We appreciate the opportunity to work with the Nebraska Panhandle, and are committed to delivering a high standard of service.
