Safety and Security

Safety Tip Line

Keeping students and staff safe is one of the highest priorities of Gering Public Schools. We conduct ongoing updates and training for staff and students to ensure the most recent, relevant procedures are in place. Secured access in each school building allows office staff control over who enters the building. When visiting each school, you will have to check in with office personnel.

Our community plays an important part in helping us provide a safe and secure environment where students can learn and thrive. If you have a safety concern or incident to share PLEASE REPORT IT TO OUR SAFETY TIP LINE.

Standard Response Protocol (SRP)

Gering Public Schools adopted the Standard Response Protocol (SRP). This is a simplified crisis response that helps staff, students, parents and first responders to quickly and adequately respond to crisis situations. The SRP is based on five actions: Lockout, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter and Hold.

The benefits of SRP include providing a standardized vocabulary that all stakeholders can understand.  For students, this provides continuity of expectations and actions throughout their educational career.  For teachers, this becomes a more simple process to train and drill.  For first responders, the common vocabulary and protocols establish a greater predictability that persists through the duration of an incident.  Parents can easily understand the practices and can reinforce the pTablerotocol.  Additionally, this protocol enables rapid response determination when an unforseen event occurs.

For more information about the Standard Response Protocol, explore the i love you guys Foundation website.

School Resource Officers

The Gering Police Department partners with Gering Public Schools to provide School Resource Officers (SROs). They work with schools to offer additional safety and security, enforcement of state laws and city ordinances, along with mentoring and building relationships with students. Additionally, our SROs work closely with the district’s Safety Team to cooperatively create and implement comprehensive safety plans. Meet our School Resource Officers!

Crisis Response Team

Gering Public Schools also has designated Crisis Team personnel in each school. These proactive teams meet regularly to discuss safety and security related topics. In addition to our Crisis Team, community partners also have a presence on the District Crisis Team, which include the Gering Police Department, Gering Fire Department and Region 22 County Emergency Management. This team actively works together to advise and help develop training, simulation exercises, and resources for the district.

FAQ: Snow Day

When we have a snow day, or a day off due to weather issues, here is how we will inform you:

  • It will be posted on the district's website and social media

  • We will announce it to radio and television using Weather Threat.

  • Families & Staff will receive a notification via phone.  We will NOT announce that we ARE having school.

Always assume that we are having school until otherwise notified by the district through the above channels.  We will make every effort to make the decision to close school as timely as possible, understanding the safety of our staff and students is our highest concern.  Makeup days will be announced in the days following a weather-related cancellation of school.
