1st Grade Essential Skills List

Math-Our goal is for your child to be able to do the following by the
end of 1st Grade.
1. Write numbers from 1-100 (1.1.1)
2. Write numbers by 10’s from 10 to 100 (1.1.1)
3. Count to 20 by 2’s (1.1.1)
4. Count to 100 by 5’s (1.1.1)
5. Count backwards from 10 to 1 by 1’s (1.1.1)
6. Recognize positions in a line (first, tenth) (1.1.1)
7. Recognize fractions in form of pie 1/2, 1/4, 1/3 (1.1.2)
8. Match number words with the numbers they represent (1.1.2)
9. Know which numbers are in the tens and ones place. Place value of 2 digit numbers (1.1.2)
10. Count items in bundles of 10 and with single items to get total (1.1.4)
11. Place number of items in a row by the number listed at the top of the row (1.1.4)
12. Recognize equal sign, subtraction sign and addition sign (1.2.1)
13. Add and subtract single and double digit numbers with answers equaling single and double digit numbers (1.2.1)
14. Estimate the number of items in a pile (1.2.2)
15. Compare two groups of items and determine which group has more (1.2.2)
16. Recognize money and be able to make change up to $1.00 and solve everyday math skills (1.13)
17. Measure a line with ruler (1.3.1)
18. Measure a line with toothpicks (1.3.1)
19. Recognize what different measurement tools are used for (1.3.2)
20. Tell time on a clock to nearest half hour (1.3.3)
21. Determine what form of measurement is used to measure weight, distance, money, time, and water (1.3.4)
22. Tell the days of the week (1.3.5)
23. Demonstrate meanings of words like above, left, right, under, over, below, up, down, near, far (1.4.1)
24. Draw shapes (1.4.2)
25. Recognize how to collect a group of data and how to record the data in a chart (1.5.1)
26. Place items into groups by color (1.5.2)
27. Interpret information in a graph (1.5.3)
28. Explain how information was gathered for a graph (1.5.4)

Reading/Writing-Our goal is for your child to be able to do the following by the end of 1st Grade:
1. Read randomly selected words from Dolch Word Lists (1.1.1)
2. Know the sounds of randomly selected phonograms (1.1.1)
3. Know words that rhyme with randomly selected words (1.1.2)
4. Know which words begin and end with the same sounds. Know which words have the same vowel sounds (1.1.2)
5. Recognize what a sentence looks like/recognize what a paragraph look like (1.1.3)
6. Know what an author does/know what an illustrator does (1.1.3)
7. Determine who the main characters are in a story and what they are doing in the story. Understanding the difference between true and make believe (1.1.4)
8. Know the meaning of words read in a story (1.1.4)
9. Read a short story at 1st grade level (1.1.5)
10. Print first and last name (1.1.7)
11. Write a dictated sentence (1.1.7)
12. Write a story about a personal experience from a story starter (1.1.7)
13. Choose the word based on verb tense that would complete the sentence (1.1.7)
14. Print randomly chosen upper and lower case letters (1.1.6)
15. Use top-bottom and left-right progression when printing letters (1.1.6)
